BSA Replicas of Statue of Liberty


According to Boy Scouts of America, Troop 101, Cheyenne, Wyoming:
There are over 200 of these replicas in 39 states in the U.S. and several of its possessions and territories.
The project was the brainchild of Kansas City businessman, J.P. Whitaker, who was then Scout Commissioner of
the Kansas City Area Council. The copper statues were manufactured by Friedley-Voshardt Co. (Chicago, IL) and
purchased through the Kansas City Boy Scout office by those wanting one. All were erected in the early 1950's
by Boy Scout troops and others to celebrate Scouting’s 40th anniversary theme, "Strengthen the Arm of Liberty."
The statues are approximately 8 1/2 feet tall without the base, constructed of sheet copper, weigh 290 pounds,
and originally cost $350 plus freight.

Gunnison, Colorado
The statue is located in Leslie J. Savage Library at Western Colorado University.
Park in the lot at N Adams St and Georgia Ave, then walk north to the library and enter on east side.
Statue is by the north wall of the main floor.

Framed certificate reads: Statue of Liberty. In 1949 the Boy Scouts of America started a non-profit project
to sell Statues of Liberty as part of their 40th anniversary celebration. Our statue was purchased and later donated
to the college by Leslie J. Savage, a Crawford, Colorado resident who was on WSC's Board of Trustees for 29 years.

The nearby portrait and display case are dedicated to the memory of Western State graduate Lt F. Scot Crismon
who died 12/30/1964 aboard the carrier USS Hancock in the South China Sea.
     


Johnstown, Colorado

Dedicated 1950, Longs Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America, Loveland Cosmopolitan Club. Replaced 1985,
Loveland Board of Realtors, Art Castings of Colorado, Zethyl Gates - Project Historian. With grateful
appreciation for their contribution, to the Loveland Community - City of Loveland 1986.

An original BSA statue was located in Loveland, but when the city no longer wanted it, it was moved to
Ben Delatour Scout Camp near Red Feather Lakes. (See, below.)


Pueblo, Colorado
In Pueblo, in front of the Pueblo County Courthouse, on northwest corner of N Main St and W 10th St.

Around the base of the statue there are also plaques honoring Medal of Honor recipients and veterans
of WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the War on Terror.


Red Feather Lakes, Colorado
East of Red Feather Lakes about 8 miles on CR-74E, then about 2.3 miles south on CR-68C at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch.
If visiting the Boy Scout Camp, be respectful and check in near the entrance.

This statue originally was located in Loveland, but when the city no longer wanted it so it was moved
to Ben Delatour Scout Camp. In 1985-86 Loveland had a replacement statue cast, whose location is described above.
